Carbon Fiber Solutions for Structural Repair and Reinforcement

By [email protected] on September 14, 2021

The global infrastructure industry is adopting carbon fiber composite solutions for structural strengthening and repair of aging, corroded infrastructure— and for good reason.

Carbon fiber offers superior performance against corrosion, resists deterioration, and lasts longer than traditional building elements. It reinforces the structure in a non-invasive way, with minimal change to the size, topography, or clearance. Additionally, carbon fiber reinforcement systems are stiff yet resilient, increasing the overall fatigue resistance of structures. The cured composite is extremely light and strong, offering ten times the strength-to-weight ratio of carbon steel. Depending on the environment, carbon fiber can last up to 50 years.

Finally, carbon fiber solutions are faster to install and at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional cement or steel reinforcement. We’ll cover the additional benefits carbon fiber provides and how you can use it below.

Utility of Carbon Fiber in Infrastructure

At Advanced FRP Systems, we use the most innovative and cost-effective carbon fiber solution for reinforcement — from bridges to piers, to dams, docks, and more.

Carbon fiber wraps can be applied to repair many structures made from traditional materials, including:

  • Concrete with damaged or cut rebar
  • Slabs with damage to the post-tension rods
  • Wooden piles and piers

Advantages of Carbon Fiber

There are many advantages to using carbon fiber composites for repair and reinforcement. Specifically for infrastructure and concrete repairs, composites are a great fit because they can be installed much quicker, and they are much lighter than alternatives.

Composites’ ease of installation and light weight make designing and implementing composite repairs much easier for contractors or maintenance managers. These benefits are especially significant when the alternative is using large, heavy steel beams to reinforce a concrete slab or rebuilding altogether. In addition, composites are frequently much more available and easier to acquire for repair projects than alternatives.

Other advantages include:

  • Offers superior strength and corrosion resistance
  • Excellent resistance to seismic loads
  • Gives minimal changes to weight or appearance
  • Flexible carbon fiber wrap conforms to any shape or size
  • Is faster to repair than traditional materials
  • Doesn’t need welding
  • Doesn’t require heavy equipment to use
  • Offers better ROI and is more affordable
  • Makes minimal noise and disruption during prep and installation

Applications of Carbon Fiber Composite in Infrastructure

Advanced FRP Systems has experience with different types of repair and reinforcement for concrete and infrastructure applications.

Fast, Adaptable Composite Repair for Concrete Construction Project

Two concrete beams next to a cooling tower on the federal courthouse building in Houston, Texas were severely degraded from water and wind and required a structurally reinforcing solution. A structural engineer calculated the appropriate repair specifications using carbon fiber to reinforce the beams. Both uni-directional and bi-directional carbon fiber composites were applied in this project.

Reinforcing Cracked Concrete for Additional Strength and Stiffness

The City of Braintree public works department required a reinforcing repair after identifying a significant crack in the concrete slab inside the police station. The composite from Advanced FRP Systems bonded directly with the concrete and completely covered the crack. The repair provided additional strength and stiffness to the area.

Carbon fiber solutions also include reinforcement, sheets, wraps, and other composite materials designed for projects subject to progressive collapse and corrosion, including:

  • Concrete Columns
  • Concrete Slabs
  • Concrete or Masonry Walls
  • Piers
  • Docks
  • Seawalls
  • Penstocks
  • Dams
  • Bridges
  • Beams
