Composite Tank Repair
Industry: Water & Wastewater
Solution: Water Tanks
ID: CTR-7-00171
Project summary:
In February of 2021, a marine research facility reached out to Advanced FRP to repair a large riveted-steel tank containing raw seawater that was heavily corroded due to a failed internal coating. At the time, the most urgent area was the bottom of the tank as it had several through-wall failures and even external corrosion. AFRP recommended a four-layer carbon fiber composite system with an immersion-grade topcoat. During an inspection two and a half years later, the facility found that the unreinforced top-half of the tank continued to experience heavy corrosion while the previously repaired tank bottom was in excellent condition. Advanced FRP again recommended a composite repair system to repair the top half of the tank and the new repair easily tied into the previous repair area, giving the facility a quick repair solution that reinforced the full tank, and will protect it from any additional internal corrosion.
