Protruding valve covered in carbon fiber composite fiber wrap

Composite Pipe Repair

Industry: Other

Solution: General Pipe Repairs - External Pipe

ID: CPR-11-00150

Project summary:

Inspectors at a steel manufacturing facility found a leak in a coke oven gas bypass line due to a crack in the valve body. A highly chemically resistant repair system was required due to the many organic molecules in the steam and the corrosive nature of coke oven gas. Advanced FRP provided a solution where the surface of the valve body would be grit blasted and the area would then be wrapped with 8 layers of high-strength high-temperature composite. The maintenance team made the repair during a short 24-hour outage and the system was brought back online without any leaks.
